About Us:

This Group from Metro-Detroit has a sound and personality that is pure entertainment. Strongly rooted in the R&B sounds of 'Motown', the NYCE Band mixes the diverse styles and rhythms of Funk, Jazz, Blues, and Rap to excite and swing you from every mood and angle. Their performances have energy and wit that can spark a crowd while maintaining the sensitivity and subtlety of true professionals. Collectively they have over '100 years' of musical experience, and have performed with and for some of the top names in the business from "Aretha to Stevie".

Let your ears be your guide to good music, good times, and good people... with a group that's real "NYCE"!!

Group Members:

Richard "Count" Jackson: This multi-talented musician plays keyboards, trumpet, and is an accomplished vocalist. Richard studied the trumpet as a young man and mastered the instrument so well that he captured the first chair position in his High School Concert Band. His musical inclination motivated him to later form and direct the Stage Band and Jazz Band at Northeastern Senior High School. Jackson's trumpet prowess eventually landed him in the great Eddie Harris' Band, with whom he toured with as well as other Motown artists from 1980 through 1985.

"Count" started playing keyboards for numerous bands in 1998 and has performed with a number of artist including The Miracles, Kim Weston, Soulful Chemistry, The Contours, and Mosaic Groove. Not only does he play Jazz, R&B, and Rock, but he also plays Gospel as the 'Minister of Music' at First Greater Baptist Church in northwest Detroit.

Jan Abrams: This well-known drummer in the Metro-Detroit area, is a very creative talent and has a superb ear for music, which accounts for a wonderfully rich and versatile singing voice. Jan has played in most major clubs and has done studio work with many of the best groups, including The Four Tops, Enchantment, The Floaters, The Christy Howard Band, and Q.T. Hush.

Abrams’ has also thoroughly studied the techniques of sound reinforcement and has amassed a wealth of knowledge in this field.

Jan’s sensitivity, stability, and wisdom add important factors to the group.

Clarence Williams, Jr. (a.k.a. “Beauj Mont”): This talented performer has been playing the guitar and singing professionally since the age of 15. Entertaining for more than 20 years, his musical acumen and abilities have been honed via performances with groups as rhythmically diverse as Motown recording artists The Contours, the Trinidad Tripoli Steel Band, Enchantment, Tropical Connection, The Tony Holland Project, The Coasters, and the Johnny Rodriguez Latin Jazz Band. This experience has enabled him to become adept in various musical styles including R&B, Jazz, Soul, Rock, Reggae, Calypso, Funk, Fusion, and the Blues.

“Beauj Mont“ (i.e. Clarence’s stage name), has both mass media and studio recording experience having been featured on local, regional, and national radio and television shows (The Jazz Café Discovery Series - WVMV 98.7 FM; The Mitch Albom Show - MSNBC / WJR 760 AM; Krystals’ MotorTown Café’ - Comcast Studios; The Scene with Nat Morris - WGPR / 107.5 FM; The Gil Maddox Show - WDIV in Detroit; Osage Beach, MO - KLOZ 92.7 FM), and on productions by 47 UMa (Zebula Ave.), The Enchantment, The Element Experience, Trinidad Tripoli Steel Band, and Tropical Connection. Clarence also has studio production experience having worked as a Technical Director, and Cameraman on cable programs for Comcast Studios in Detroit.

John “Bass” Foley: Born into a musical family which nourished his talent and desire to play the Bass guitar, John was influenced at an early age by Big Band music, Gospel traditions, and “The Motown Sound”. A ‘teen-age’ idol, John “Bass“ was frequently found on stage performing with well-known entertainers and began recording with various groups in the mid “70’s” such as Chapter 8, Enchantment, The Floaters, The Spinners, Dennis Edwards’ Temptations, and Spanky Wilson.

John continues to enjoy entertaining the public -- like second nature you can find him on stage, in his zone, being a “smooth operator”.
